You've heard people talk about Orange NSW. They mention the wine, the food, the stunning autumn colours. But what they don't tell you is how it feels to be there, the way the pace of life shifts the moment you leave the highway, the way a 3-hour drive from Sydney can feel like an entirely different world.
We've been managing holiday accommodation in Orange and the Central West for years now, and we still get messages from guests saying some version of the same thing: "We had no idea it was going to be this good."
So here's your honest guide to a weekend in Orange NSW, what to do, where to eat, and most importantly, where to stay.
The best thing about Orange is that it rewards people who arrive with no agenda. Check into your accommodation, open a bottle of something local, and do absolutely nothing for an hour. If you're staying in one of our properties outside of town, a farmhouse on five acres or a heritage cottage surrounded by country gardens, you'll understand immediately why people keep coming back.
If you're driving from Sydney, you're looking at roughly 3 hours via the Great Western Highway, or the slightly longer but more scenic route through Lithgow. Either way, aim to arrive before dark. The golden hour light over the ranges around Orange is something else entirely.
Friday night dinner: Orange's food scene punches well above its weight for a regional city. It's always worth booking ahead, but there's generally something available, so don't let a full restaurant stop you from heading out.

Morning
Orange mornings deserve to be slow. The Orange Farmers Market runs on the second Saturday of every month from 8.30am to midday at Civic Square, if you're in town on the right weekend, don't miss it. Local producers, fresh bread, seasonal fruit, and coffee that makes it genuinely hard to leave.

Orange sits at an altitude of around 600-900 metres above sea level, giving it a cool climate that produces exceptional wines, particularly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sunday in Orange is for doing less than you think you should. If you're staying at one of our properties outside of town, spend the morning outside. Watch the light change over the paddocks. Make breakfast properly. Let checkout creep up on you.

Even non-golfers should drive past. The heritage clubhouse is beautiful and the Sunday roast is a regional institution.

Wine grapes and stone fruit on the same property, the views from the cellar door are among the best in the region.

Drive to Millthorpe, Molong or Canowindra
Each one is worth the detour. Millthorpe is charming and walkable with great cafes and boutique shops. Molong is a classic country town. Canowindra is known for its hot air ballooning and the Age of Fishes Museum, genuinely unexpected and brilliant.

Orange F.O.O.D Week (April)
If you can time a visit around it, do. The region's annual food and wine festival transforms everything. Book accommodation well ahead, it sells out fast.
